A Note on Conservative Mixing: Implications for Selecting Salinity-Transport Model Constituents in the San Francisco Estuary

چکیده

The deviation of specific electrical conductance (EC) from conservative mixing behavior is well-established in the scientific literature. This principle based on observation that, as salt concentration a water sample increases, mobility individual ions decreases, and thus their ability to conduct electricity decreases. Despite this fact, some commonly used models for salinity transport San Francisco Estuary (estuary) utilize EC primary simulation constituent, treating it quantity. Such modeling approach has likely been followed exploit wide availability data model calibration validation, obviate need translate between domain characterized by multiple source waters with varying ionic make-ups. Arguably, provides reasonable trade-off translation error error. In paper, we critically evaluate approach, employing an extensive set that includes measurements major ion concentrations estuary. We demonstrate quantify steady-state, behavior; review three bulk measures (practical salinity, strength, limiting equivalent conductance); source-dependent correlations find conductance—a value assumes uninhibited among sample—to be attractive alternative addition being quantity, consistently correlated estuary’s dominant waters, addresses concerns related data-translation conclude paper discussing pros cons adopting various salinity-transport constituents.

Optimization of a Model to Predict Salinity Intrusion in San Francisco Bay Estuary Using a Genetic Algorithm

Salinity intrusion is a significant issue in the San Francisco Bay Delta because this estuary contributes substantially to fresh water supply for much of northern California. Traditionally, salinity along the estuary has been measured using monitoring instruments installed at various locations within the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta system, and these measurements are used to predict futur...

Shifts in Zooplankton Community Structure: Implications for Food Web Processes in the Upper San Francisco Estuary

Zooplankton are an important trophic link and a key food source for many larval fish species in estuarine ecosystems. The present study documents temporal and spatial zooplankton dynamics in Suisun Bay and the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta—the landward portion of the San Francisco Estuary (California, USA)—over a 37year period (1972–2008). The zooplankton community experienced major changes in s...

Biological effects of anthropogenic contaminants in the San Francisco Estuary.

Concentrations of many anthropogenic contaminants in the San Francisco Estuary exist at levels that have been associated with biological effects elsewhere, so there is a potential for them to cause biological effects in the Estuary. The purpose of this paper is to summarize information about biological effects on the Estuary's plankton, benthos, fish, birds, and mammals, gathered since the earl...

Tidal Wetland Vegetation in the San Francisco Bay-Delta Estuary

We analyzed tidal wetland vegetation patterns in the San Francisco Bay–Delta estuary (Bay–Delta) and discuss their significance for future conservation. Our objective was to conduct a balanced, random sample of six historic “remnant” tidal wetlands along a salinity gradient that ranged from southern San Pablo Bay to the lower Delta. We also wanted to compare diversity among these sites at five ...
